PERFECT TIMING Timex, a leader in outdoor and sports performance timepieces, have announced that the Timex® Ironman® Sleek™ 150-Lap watch with TapScreen™ Technology, a revolutionary collection of precision sports timing instruments that conveniently responds to an athlete’s touch, has been awarded the Runner’s World ispo 2010 Award for Technology. The collection’s revolutionary TapScreen™ Technology allows users to easily activate the lap feature by “tapping” anywhere on the timepiece’s face, rather than having to locate and push buttons mid-stride. The Target time pacer delivers distinct audible alerts, indicating if the runner is on pace, slow or fast, in addition to displaying the time ahead or behind pace. This allows athletes to adjust their speed accordingly and adhere to race day strategy. Read more here.

IT’S THE FAMILY WAY It’s hard to get a conversation at the Barach family that does not include Ironman. This wonderful husband and wife pair live in Whangarei, in the north of New Zealand – a magnificent part of the world. Brian and Oringa will compete again in 2011, both in the 60-64 year age group with Oringa chasing her eighth finish and Brian his seventh. Brian, who is a mechanic by trade, enjoyed a superb 13:15.11 last year to finish fourth in his age group. His highlight was qualifying for the ITU Worlds in the Olympic distance two years ago. Oringa, a nurse specialist, cut things a trifle fine last year. Her 16:59.15 was just 45 seconds inside the 17 hour cut-off. That is not going to deter Oringa who reckons she never, ever gives up. She has a finish at the Ironman World Championships in 2007 to testify to that – and she still has that 16:30 barrier that she wants to crack.
Last year their exploits led to elder daughter Alice getting the bug. The Dunedin physiotherapist duly added the Barach family name to the list of IMNZ finishers with a splendid 12:40.11 debut. Younger daughter Polly came to Taupo to support the family and caught that same bug, she completed the Rotoura Marathon and has now entered for Ironman New Zealand 2011. Presumably son Toby, who has supported the family most years, understands the pressures building on him for 2012!!!!
